  6.     NORTON UTILITIES 5.0 and WINDOWS COMPATIBILITY

  9. Most of the programs that make up the Norton Utilities are
  10. compatible with Windows 3.0, although some features may be
  11. inaccessible.  Any programs that might conflict with Windows
  12. will recommend that you exit to DOS, and those that are not
  13. safe to run under Windows will not run.
  14.  
  15. There are two main concerns with running DOS applications of
  16. any type under Windows.   The first involves disk access, and
  17. the second involves use of memory.
  18.  
  19. Windows is an operating system, much like DOS is an operating
  20. system, but Windows runs on top of DOS and actually uses it to
  21. perform disk and file operations.  The Norton Utilties can work
  22. with disks far below the DOS level, and this is where conflicts
  23. can occur.  Because Windows can possibly interfere with any
  24. disk access that is not its own, the best way to avoid trouble
  25. is not to run anything that may conflict.  Several of the
  26. Norton Utilities fall into this category.

  28. Windows also maintains open files on the disk, and trying to
  29. move things around on the disk could cause damage to these
  30. files.  For instance, on a 386 machine running in Windows
  31. Enhanced mode, it is not unusual to have a 3 or 4 MB file kept
  32. open while running Windows.  As you can imagine, running
  33. something such as Speed Disk with a 3 MB open file will really
  34. make a mess of things.

  36. For the first time, the Norton Utilities include two programs,
  37. Norton Cache and Diskreet, that can use extended and/or
  38. expanded memory.  This may cause conflicts with Windows' own
  39. memory management unless steps are taken to avoid potential
  40. conflicts.  Do not install the cache from Windows, or you could
  41. lock your system cold.  Most likely, no damage will be done,
  42. but you will have to reset the computer.

  44. The programs that are not safe to run under Windows will
  45. display a message explaining why they will not run, then they
  46. will exit automatically.  The user cannot override this
  47. message.  Those programs that will run but could potentially
  48. cause conflicts will display a recommendation that the user
  49. exit to DOS, but the user can choose to ignore the warning and
  50. continue, as long as they remember not to do any operations
  51. that could be destructive.

  60. Programs that will run but are not recommended to be run under Windows:

  65. Safe Format

  68. Programs that will run without complications under Windows:

  70. Batch Enhancer
  71. File Find
  72. Install
  73. Norton Control Center
  74. Norton Change Directory (NCD)
  75. Norton Program (Norton Integrator)
  76. WipeInfo

  78. The following programs have some restrictions when running under Windows:
  79.  
  80. Norton Disk Doctor - Will find errors, but will not make any
  81. corrections to the disk.  In other words, it will read from,
  82. but not write to, the disk.  Exit Windows and re-run NDD if
  83. there are problems that need to be corrected.

  85. Disk Editor - Same problem as Disk Doctor.  Should be run in
  86. Read-Only mode to be safe.
  87.  
  88. Norton Cache - Can only be used with Windows running in Real
  89. mode.  Cannot be used in Standard or Enhanced mode.  Conflicts
  90. with Windows' SMARTDRIVE cache in Standard and Enhanced mode.

  92. Diskreet - When running under Windows, all NDisks should be set
  93. to Manual open only.  In addition, Quick Close, Auto Close
  94. Timeout, and the Screen Clear and Keyboard Lock features will
  95. be disabled.

  97. To prevent memory conflicts, the /NOHMA switch must be included
  98. when the device driver is loaded into the CONFIG.SYS file.

  104. File Fix - May cause problems when unzapping a dBASE file.
  105.  
  106. File Save - As a general rule, File Save should be loaded and
  107. activated BEFORE running Windows.

  109. System Information - The CPU benchmark will not reflect the
  110. true speed of the computer.  In fact, it will fluctuate wildly.

  112. Image - Should be run before loading Windows.
